Last Friday, a controversial entry by a Russian blogger about wearing mini and aging made waves in the style-conscious community. I decided to catch the wave and wrote an article on the same subject for the Russian part of my website.
What I have come to realize while working with women as an image consultant is that our bone structure has much more to do with wearing minis than our age. I use bone structure to loosely organize all women into two types: S-Sirens and Z-Amazons. Sirens have a softer bone structure and fall into Renaissance inspired aesthetics. They usually have a hard time making miniskirts work for them even while they are insanely fit and annoyingly young. Amazons, on the contrary, have a stronger bone structure with increased rugosity (a term I borrow from forensic anthropology for my style blog writings). The increased rugosity makes Amazons lean more towards nature and modern art for their style inspiration. These aesthetics help Z-type women shine and look feminine in shorter skirts, age 7 through 77 and beyond.
Many women combine qualities of both S and Z types and need to navigate between them. But Brigitte Macron is a textbook Amazon, and above-the-knee skirts are her textbook personal style solution. Technically, what she is wearing for her formal appearances is not a mini; it is what I call a “millennium length pencil skirt.” This length works wonders for her physique.
But if a woman like Brigitte Macron ever blessed me with the question of what she should do differently, I’d say I’d really love to see what a sleek, simple, straight-out-of-the-shower, Ursula Andress-like hairstyle brings to her looks. Based on recent pictures, an updo looks better than a bob, and hints that there is a promise of even sleeker hairstyles without bangs and layers, but pulled back into a tight bun or loop-ponytail. That would leave her face entirely open, in an Amazon warrior style.
